As Material Artist, you will work with the Environment & Props team to develop materials that push the realism within the games. You’ll help define material and asset workflows, improve existing practices, and build a library of materials to be used by all art disciplines.
Requirements
- Work closely with leads and art teams to create high-fidelity materials via Substance Designer/Painter;
- Help build and maintain the studio's Substance library of materials & utilities;
- Help build and maintain complex in-engine materials using a proprietary material editor;
- Work with the Art Manager and Production to deliver time estimates for texture/material creation;
- Be proactive and self-motivated, and research new tools and techniques to create more efficient and visually appealing environments;
- Create documentation & tutorials, and requirements for the new pipelines & techniques;
- Collaborate with 3D artists, designers, and other development teams to understand and meet content creator needs of the game;
- Creates environment assets and scenes while considering hardware and design limitations and the overall art vision of the project;
- Mentors less experienced members of the team.
Would be a plus
- Minimum of 3 years of experience in AAA game development or credit on at least one AAA title as material artist;
- Portfolio demonstrating a wide variety of tiled and one-to-one materials created using both procedural and 3d sculpted techniques and showing attention to detail, plausibility and an aesthetic eye;
- Expert skills in Substance Designer/Painter;
- Solid understanding of PBR rendering and the interaction between materials and lighting;
- Experience working with game engines and various real-time rendering software;
- Prior knowledge and experience crafting 3D environment assets and scenes demonstrating;
- Solid understanding of color theory and experience creating balanced color palettes with strong appeal;
- Good sense of form, volume, structure, and silhouette;
- Strong understanding of composition and balance;
- Solid understanding of efficient low poly mesh techniques;
- Strong UV layout techniques;
- Understanding of Texel density, memory limitations, etc.;
- Ability to follow concept/reference and ability to work with a wide range of styles with minimal concept and direction;
- Strong understanding of modular level creation methods;
- Experience with high poly sculpting and modelling software such as Z-Brush & Maya;
- Good verbal and written communication skills;
- Strong time management, organisationals skills, and ability to prioritise tasks/requests in order to meet deadlines.
