We are looking for a Principal Cosmos DB Architect with 10–15 years of experience to spearhead the data architecture for our mission-critical OCR and AI platforms. This senior leadership role requires a deep mastery of Java development and NoSQL modeling to build high-performance systems. You will act as the strategic link between data design and application logic, collaborating with cross-functional teams to deliver global scalability, minimal latency, and optimized cost-efficiency.
Essential functions
Key Responsibilities
- Data Architecture & Design: Lead the design and implementation of complex data models using Azure Cosmos DB (SQL/Core API), ensuring optimal partitioning and indexing strategies.
- System Optimization: Architect high-throughput, low-latency data access patterns specifically tailored for heavy-load OCR and AI processing workflows.
- Java Integration: Develop and maintain robust data access layers using Java and Spring Boot, ensuring seamless integration between our services and the database.
- Performance Engineering: Conduct performance tuning, RU (Request Unit) management, and cost-optimization audits to ensure the database scales efficiently.
- Collaboration: Partner with Backend Engineers and Platform Architects to define API contracts and cloud infrastructure requirements.
- Best Practices: Establish and document standards for NoSQL schema design, consistency levels, and disaster recovery within the Azure ecosystem.
Qualifications
Technical Requirements
- Primary Database Expertise: Extensive hands-on experience with Azure Cosmos DB, specifically focusing on the Core (SQL) API.
- Data Modeling Mastery: Proven ability to design effective partitioning strategies (synthetic keys, hierarchical partitioning) and complex indexing policies to prevent hotspots.
- Java Ecosystem: Advanced proficiency in Java development, with significant experience using the Spring/Spring Boot framework and the Azure Cosmos DB Java SDK.
- Cloud Infrastructure: Strong architectural knowledge of Azure Cloud services and how they integrate with distributed database systems.
- Service Design: Deep understanding of RESTful service integration and microservices architecture.
- Performance Focused: Experience building systems that handle high-concurrency workloads with sub-10ms latency requirements.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with Azure Functions or Logic Apps for event-driven data processing.
- Familiarity with AI/ML data pipelines or OCR engine outputs (e.g., Azure AI Document Intelligence).
- Knowledge of Azure DevOps, CI/CD pipelines, and Infrastructure as Code (Terraform or Bicep).
Would be a plus
- Experience working with OCR or document-processing data
- Exposure to polyglot persistence or multi-database architectures
- Experience supporting production data platforms at scale
