Backend Engineer (Java / GCP)

We are seeking a Backend Engineer to support the cloud modernization and platform stabilization of a core in-store application for the world’s largest home improvement retailer. In this role, you will modernize legacy dependencies into cloud-native microservices on Google Cloud Platform (GCP), boost system resiliency, and enhance observability. Working alongside internal engineering anchors, you will leverage AI-assisted coding tools to accelerate production deliverables on a high-priority timeline.

Essential functions

Design and build robust backend microservices using Java.
Improve system resiliency, performance, and monitoring across cloud-native environments.
Set up observability dashboards and telemetry using GCP native services, Grafana, and Looker.
Integrate enterprise data solutions across Cloud Spanner, Cloud SQL, BigQuery, Cloud Storage, and Elastic.
Collaborate closely in a paired associate-anchor model, actively using AI coding tools (Claude / GitHub Copilot) to accelerate refactoring, testing, and feature delivery.

Qualifications

Proven hands-on experience in enterprise environments using Java and Spring Boot / MVC / WebFlux.
Proven hands-on experience architecting and deploying services on Google Cloud Platform (GCP).
Practical, hands-on experience using AI-assisted development tools (Claude or GitHub Copilot) for production refactoring, testing, and debugging.
Strong background in system resiliency, monitoring, and observability within cloud ecosystems.
Hands-on experience with containerization and CI/CD tools (Docker, GitHub Actions, or Cloud Foundry).

Would be a plus

Familiarity with search and observability suites like Elasticsearch, Grafana, or Looker.
Experience operating within paired programming or associate-anchor delivery models.
