Responsibilities:
Own and manage the U.S. federal, state, and local tax compliance function, including oversight of federal corporate income tax returns, state income and franchise tax returns, and all related estimated payments and extensions.
Lead the company's state and local tax (SALT) program, including income and franchise tax compliance, nexus analysis, and registration management across all applicable jurisdictions.
Oversee the sales and use tax compliance process, including managing third-party service providers or internal resources responsible for filings, exemption certificate management, and jurisdictional registration — ensuring accuracy and timeliness without necessarily performing the work directly.
Manage and enhance processes related to IRC Section 174 (R&D expenditure capitalization), ensuring accurate identification, documentation, and treatment of qualified research expenditures in coordination with Engineering, Product, and Finance teams. Manage the annual ASC 740 income tax provision process, including current and deferred tax calculations and uncertain tax position analysis, in support of the company's financial reporting requirements.
Monitor and assess the impact of domestic tax legislative and regulatory changes (including IRS guidance, state tax law changes, and multi-state developments) and advise leadership on business impact.
Develop and maintain domestic tax planning strategies that align with Xsolla's business model as a global merchant of record and payment solutions provider, including identifying opportunities to optimize the company's effective tax rate.
Partner with external advisors and auditors on tax audits, examinations, and notices at the federal and state levels.
Monitor and assess the impact of domestic tax legislative and regulatory changes, including IRS guidance and state tax law developments, and advise leadership on business impact.
Develop and maintain domestic tax planning strategies that align with Xsolla's business model as a global merchant of record and payment solutions provider.
Manage federal and state tax audits, examinations, and notices end-to-end, including coordinating responses, engaging with tax authorities, and partnering with external advisors to resolve matters efficiently.
Support M&A activity and other strategic transactions with domestic tax due diligence and structuring analysis as needed.
Collaborate closely with the broader Finance, Legal, and Accounting teams to ensure tax considerations are integrated into business decisions.
Build, document, and continuously improve domestic tax policies, processes, and internal controls.
Qualifications & Skills:
Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field; CPA and/or MST/JD strongly preferred.
8+ years of progressive domestic tax experience in public accounting (Big 4 or large regional firm) and/or in-house corporate tax.
Comprehensive, hands-on knowledge of U.S. federal corporate income tax, including consolidated return regulations.
Demonstrated expertise in state and local taxation, including income/franchise tax, sales and use tax compliance and nexus analysis.
Deep working knowledge of IRC Section 174 and R&D expenditure capitalization rules. Working knowledge ofASC 740 income tax provision concepts, including current and deferred tax calculations and uncertain tax positions.
Proven ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines in a fast-paced, high-growth environment.
Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to present complex tax issues clearly to non-tax stakeholders.
Nice to Have:
Experience in the technology, ecommerce, digital payments, gaming, or SaaS industry.
Familiarity with the domestic tax considerations for companies operating as a merchant of record.
Experience with multi-state sales tax software (e.g., Avalara, Vertex).
Exposure to international tax concepts and how they interface with domestic reporting.
Experience working with or supporting tax-related aspects of M&A transactions.
