Lead Java Engineer

We are seeking a Senior Backend / GenAI Engineer for a contractor, hands-on individual contributor lead role. This position is ideal for an experienced engineer who remains deeply hands-on in code while also providing technical direction, mentoring, and delivery leadership for engineering squads or workstreams.

The role is approximately 80% hands-on engineering and 20% technical leadership. The successful candidate will design, build, and ship secure, scalable backend services while helping the team adopt modern GenAI, AI-agent, and AI-assisted software development practices. This engineer will work across backend platforms, cloud-native systems, distributed services, and production-grade AI integrations, including LLM-powered applications, RAG, Agentic RAG, AI agents, multi-agent systems, workflow orchestration, and AI-assisted development tooling.

Essential functions

8–12 years of total software engineering experience

- 3–5 years leading engineering squads, streams, or complex technical initiatives while remaining hands-on in code

- Vector Databases & Retrieval: OpenSearch, pgvector, Pinecone, Redis

- AI Frameworks & Agent Platforms: LangGraph, LangChain, CrewAI, Semantic Kernel, AutoGen, OpenAI Agents SDK, MCP, A2A

- AI-Assisted Development Tools: GitHub Copilot, Cline, Aider, Cursor, Claude Code, and similar tools

The engineer will:

- Own end-to-end delivery from design through production rollout

- Build reliable Java/Spring Boot microservices and APIs

- Integrate LLM-powered capabilities into enterprise systems

- Mentor engineers informally through design guidance, reviews, and pairing

- Improve engineering velocity through CI/CD, automation, DevSecOps, and AI-assisted development

- Establish best practices for secure, observable, and responsible AI-enabled software delivery

Qualifications

Translate product epics and business requirements into actionable technical tasks, implementation plans, and delivery milestones.

- Own end-to-end design, development, testing, deployment, and production support for backend and AI-enabled services.

- Write high-quality, maintainable, testable, and secure code.

- Conduct effective code reviews and raise engineering standards across the team.

- Produce concise technical documentation, design notes, API specifications, and operational runbooks.

- Identify and resolve complex defects, performance bottlenecks, integration issues, and production incidents.

- Unblock engineers through hands-on support, pairing, debugging, and technical decision-making.
