We are looking for a Staff Java Engineer to join a platform team working on high-performance Java infrastructure and networking solutions for a leading global technology company.
The team develops and maintains Java-based tooling centered around ServiceTalk, an open-source networking library built on top of Netty. A key focus of the project is scaling development of adapter layers that bridge legacy systems using Apache HttpClient APIs with the newer ServiceTalk-based architecture.
This role involves working on platform-level engineering challenges, improving maintainability of existing systems, refactoring legacy components, and building new APIs and services that support large-scale internal adoption.
Essential functions
- Support, maintain, and refactor existing Java platform components
- Design and develop new backend services and APIs
- Contribute to scaling and improving ServiceTalk adapter development
- Work with legacy integrations and modernize existing architecture
- Ensure backward compatibility and smooth migration strategies across releases
- Write clean, maintainable, and well-documented production code
- Participate in architecture discussions, code reviews, and technical decision-making
- Develop unit and integration tests to ensure reliability and stability
- Collaborate directly with the client’s engineering team during regular sync calls
Qualifications
- Upper-Intermediate+ English (spoken and written)
- Regular overlap with the client team, including calls up to 9:00 PM Kyiv time
- Strong commercial experience with Java
- Deep expertise in core Java, concurrency, and JVM ecosystem
- Strong understanding of algorithms and data structures
- including practical knowledge of collections internals, graphs, trees, etc.
- Solid understanding of software design patterns
- e.g. Chain of Responsibility, Command, and similar
- Strong experience with multithreading and concurrency
