EPAM is seeking a Senior Scala Engineer to join the Experimentation & Experience Controls team building a high-scale, in-house A/B testing and Feature Flagging platform for one of the world's most iconic entertainment and media companies — a global leader in streaming, entertainment brands, and digital experiences reaching hundreds of millions of users worldwide.
The platform is capable of serving millions of concurrent requests with single-digit millisecond response times, and its scope extends across the client's entire portfolio of streaming products and entertainment brands.
You will be a key part of an engaging, dynamic, and inclusive engineering organisation, grounded in Scrum and Agile practices, CI/CD, close collaboration, and a commitment to continuous learning and improvement.
Responsibilities
- Lead a significant part of the implementation, design, testing, and deployment of services running in a multi-region cloud environment
- Ensure quality and high standards for feature development through automated testing and code reviews, setting examples for others to follow
- Work with the Lead Engineer in partnership with Product and Project Management to influence roadmap and architectural decisions within the team
- Support Agile practices within the squad, actively contributing to ceremonies such as standup and planning
- Mentor less experienced engineers to help them improve their technical abilities and build their profiles within and outside the organisation
- Contribute to an inclusive culture that values learning, close collaboration, and strives for excellence
Requirements
- Strong understanding of high-quality coding, testing, and development practices
- Experience in a JVM language such as Java, Scala, or Kotlin (the team primarily uses Scala with functional programming principles and frameworks such as Cats Effect and ZIO — willingness to learn Scala is welcome)
- Familiarity designing, building, and operating distributed systems with multi-level failover and fallback strategies
- Familiarity with at least one major cloud provider: AWS, GCP, or Azure
- Familiarity with Terraform or other infrastructure-as-code (IaC) tooling
- Strong communication skills — ability to understand, frame, and simplify both technical and business requirements
- Experience mentoring and coaching engineers on technical and soft skills
Nice to have
- Experience building micro/web services — including REST and GraphQL
- Experience or interest in functional programming and its real-world applications — particularly Scala stacks such as Cats Effect and ZIO
- Experience with relational and NoSQL databases, particularly PostgreSQL, Aurora, and DynamoDB — including data modelling and query performance optimisation
- Experience with Kinesis, Kafka, or other streaming data technologies
- Familiarity with data warehouse, pipeline, and analytics platforms such as Databricks or Snowflake
- Background in high-traffic, low-latency systems serving millions of concurrent users
- Experience working in the entertainment, media, or streaming domain
