The next great challenge is coming:
Room 8 Studio is looking for a proficient and experienced Senior Level Designer, who will serve on a AAA remake of one of the most acclaimed squad-based tactical shooters of its era, rebuilt from the ground up in Unreal Engine 5. You will set the level design language for the entire project, own macro flow and layout direction, and hold the quality bar across every combat arena and traversal space. Beyond your own output, this role demands that you operate as the primary bridge between Level Design, Game Design, Art, and Engineering — keeping various design decisions aligned as the game evolves through production.
Requirements
- 8+ years of professional experience in Level Design on AA/AAA PC or console titles.
- At least one shipped title with substantial ownership of linear or semi-linear level design across a full product.
- Proven expertise in combat arena design for linear FPS or action titles — cover integration, enemy placement logic, approach vector design, and spatial pacing.
- Strong in Unreal Engine 5 — Blueprint scripting, terrain and landscape tools, performance-conscious layout practices.
- Experience leading or mentoring a Level Design team.
- Practical navmesh and AI navigation knowledge.
- Strong documentation skills.
- Proven cross-disciplinary collaborator.
- Excellent written and verbal English.
Would be a plus
- Background in linear tactical shooters or squad-based FPS games.
- Background in designing environments for co-op experiences.
- Experience shipping a remake, reboot, or reimagining of an existing title.
- Experience mentoring designers or leading design initiatives across a team.
Responsibilities
- Define and document the level design language for the project, establishing the standard all Level Designers work to.
- Own macro flow and layout direction for the full game, ensuring cohesive pacing, mission-to-mission progression, and a consistent player experience throughout.
- Lead and mentor the Level Design team — review work-in-progress layouts and encounters, provide structured feedback, conduct design reviews, and actively develop team members.
- Review all levels for gameplay readability — cover legibility, sightlines, player orientation, engagement distances, and squad pathfinding clarity.
- Partner directly with the Game Design to validate navmesh quality, enemy behavior integrity, and tactical viability across every combat arena.
- Support the Art team in maintaining gameplay integrity.
- Ensure all level layouts actively support squad mechanics — fireteam positioning, command zone clarity, multi-approach routing, and co-op play considerations.
- Maintain detailed design documentation.
