We are seeking a Lead Software Engineer (Deputy Tech Lead) to drive the design and build of a greenfield enterprise integration platform on Microsoft Azure from scratch. In this role, you will combine hands-on implementation with technical leadership—helping architect contract-first integration patterns, setting pipeline quality gates, mentoring engineers, and acting as the Technical Lead’s trusted deputy across a complex, multi-vendor ecosystem for a UK-based sustainability organisation.
Essential functions
- Architecture & Technical Ownership: Partner with the Integration Architect to build core platform components—contract repositories, API/event catalogues, APIOps pipelines, Azure API Management, Event Hubs, Service Bus, and managed file exchange.
- Hands-on Delivery: Build, test, and deploy key integrations using C#/.NET and Infrastructure as Code (Bicep/Terraform), ensuring high performance, scalability, and strict security standards (OAuth2, HMAC, Key Vault).
- Deputy Leadership & Mentorship: Serve as deputy to the Technical Lead—running technical discussions, making day-to-day decisions in their absence, conducting constructive code reviews, and mentoring integration engineers.
- Cross-Team & Data Platform Alignment: Collaborate closely with the Data Platform team to establish data contracts, operational boundaries, and zero-copy access to source data (Databricks / Microsoft Fabric / Purview).
- Standards & Vendor Alignment: Enforce contract-first integration standards (OpenAPI, JSON Schema, Avro) and pipeline quality gates to align external vendor teams on consistent integration patterns.
Qualifications
- Integration & Backend Experience: 8+ years of hands-on experience in enterprise integration or backend engineering.
- Azure Integration Stack: Deep production experience with Azure API Management (policies, products, deployment as code), Azure Service Bus, Event Hubs, and serverless compute (Azure Functions / Logic Apps).
- Contract-First & Messaging: Expertise in REST API design using OpenAPI and JSON Schema, as well as asynchronous messaging patterns.
- Cloud Security & Infrastructure: Strong knowledge of Entra ID, Key Vault, private endpoints, OAuth2, HMAC, Bicep/Terraform, and Azure DevOps CI/CD pipelines.
- Programming Languages: Proficiency in C# and .NET (or a comparable enterprise backend language).
- Communication & Stakeholder Management: Outstanding written and spoken English (B2+), with proven ability to whiteboard with engineers and present technical trade-offs clearly to client architects and senior stakeholders.
Would be a plus
- Data & Schema Governance: Experience with Azure API Center, Avro, schema registries, APIOps, or data governance frameworks (e.g., Microsoft Purview).
- Modern Data Platforms: Familiarity with Databricks, Microsoft Fabric, or OneLake integrations.
- Enterprise Platforms: Experience integrating with major CRM, ERP, or ITSM platforms.
- Regulated / Multi-Vendor Environments: Prior experience in public-scheme, regulated, or multi-supplier programmes with formal design authorities.
