Forward Deployed Engineer – Modern Software Delivery & Platform Engineering

We're looking for experienced Forward Deployed Engineers who are passionate about improving software delivery at scale. This is a hands-on engineering role working directly with development teams to modernise engineering practices, accelerate delivery and improve software quality across critical enterprise applications.

You'll embed with engineering teams to solve real-world delivery challenges, helping organisations adopt Continuous Delivery, automated testing, DevOps and Site Reliability Engineering (SRE) best practices. Rather than acting as a consultant, you'll write production code, build deployment pipelines, modernise applications and leave teams with sustainable engineering practices.

This role is approximately 70% hands-on coding and configuration, making it ideal for engineers who enjoy solving technical problems while driving engineering transformation.

Essential functions

Working alongside software engineering teams, you'll improve development workflows, modernise legacy applications and implement automation that enables frequent, safe and reliable software releases.

You'll work across Java and TypeScript applications, cloud-native infrastructure and modern CI/CD platforms, helping teams increase deployment frequency while improving security, testing and operational resilience.

• Partner with development teams to improve engineering practices and delivery capability
• Design and implement comprehensive automated testing strategies using TDD principles
• Build smoke, integration and end-to-end test suites that can run locally and within deployment pipelines
• Develop and maintain modern Continuous Integration and Continuous Delivery pipelines
• Upgrade legacy Java and Node.js applications to supported runtimes and dependency versions
• Modernise applications through containerisation using Docker and Kubernetes/OpenShift
• Automate dependency management using Renovate
• Improve source control strategies, branching models and code review processes
• Strengthen application security, authentication, authorisation and secrets management
• Automate deployments, database migrations and infrastructure changes using tools such as Liquibase and Ansible
• Implement monitoring, logging, observability and resilient deployment strategies
• Work closely with engineering teams to embed best practices and leave lasting improvements

Qualifications

We're looking for engineers who enjoy writing high-quality software while helping other teams become better engineers.

You'll ideally have experience with:

• Strong software engineering background in Java, Kotlin, Scala or TypeScript
• Test-Driven Development (TDD) and automated testing frameworks
• CI/CD implementation and release automation
• Secure software development practices
• Docker and Kubernetes/OpenShift
• Linux (Red Hat preferred)
• Build tools including Maven, Gradle and npm
• Modern observability and monitoring practices
• Infrastructure automation
• AI-assisted software development using tools such as GitHub Copilot or similar

You'll work with a modern engineering stack including Java, Kotlin, TypeScript, Spring Boot, Node.js, Docker, Kubernetes, OpenShift, Linux (Red Hat), Maven, Gradle, npm, Liquibase, Ansible, Renovate, Git, CI/CD pipelines, automated testing frameworks, observability platforms, secrets management, authentication, authorisation and GitHub Copilot.
